Light crude oil prices traded higher as US equities increased for the first time in four days and Iran test-fired its Shahab-3 missile amid threats of greater sanctions because of its nuclear program.

Oil followed stocks higher as takeovers in the drug and technology industries added to evidence that mergers and acquisitions are rebounding from the slowest pace in six years. The successful launch earlier today of the Shahab-3 puts Israel within reach, based on a range announced by Iran’s military.

Oil “started popping up when the equities opened,” said Brad Samples, a commodity analyst for Summit Energy Inc. in Louisville, Kentucky. “You got a double hit from the nuclear news and the missile tests that could be giving us a little buying pressure. There’s a lot of media focus about Iran right now, and that’s a fairly reliable standby for the bulls.”

Crude oil for November delivery rose 1.1 percent, to $66.75 a barrel at 10:51 a.m. on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Futures have gained 50 percent this year.

Oil was little changed before the U.S. stock market opened, but is now trading up in the mid $67 range.
