BP racks up 64,000 claims over Gulf of Mexico oil spill

Oil company BP has racked up over 64,000 claims totalling $600m in relation to compensation for victims of the oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

Earlier, BP said the disaster, now into its tenth week, had already cost it $2bn. As of last night, the British company had paid out only $104m to claimants.

The oil spill, which began on April 20th 2010, has caused economic disruption along the US Gulf Coast, hurting fishing and tourism while soiling seashores and marshes. Claims can be filed over lost wages, business interruption, lost profits, personal injuries and even death in some instances.

BP has come under criticism for being slow in paying claims from some people who have already sought compensation from the company before BP agreed last week to set up the new fund under pressure from US President Obama.
