Gulf oil spill estimates higher, now 1.68M gallons daily
Published on June 11, 2010 by oilprices · No CommentsAs many as 1,680,000 gallons (40,000 barrels) of oil a day may have been spilling out from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, doubling many previous estimates.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron and President Obama will discuss the spill this weekend as BP’s latest efforts to stop the spill had reported that the current device in place on the well collected 15,800 barrels of oil on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Obama administration announced that the chairman of BP, Carl-Henric Svanberg, had been asked to meet Mr Obama and the officer in charge of the relief effort, Adm Thad Allen, at the White House. The meeting will be held amid growing worry about whether BP would have enough money to pay for the clean up operation and compensation for all those affected.
Yesterday, the US attorney general refused to rule out the possibility of the federal government obtaining an injunction against BP to stop it paying a share dividend.
Department of justice officials also expressed concern that BP may not pay for the clean up, which has so far cost $1.43bn, with billions of dollars more in damages likely to be awarded to fishermen and others affected.
BP also said it hoped to start collecting an extra 10,000 barrels of oil and gas each day from the oil spill, begining next week.
