Senators move to close 'London loophole' in oil trades
US lawmakers want regulators to close the so-called "London loophole" in crude oil trading amid growing concerns over the role of speculators in record energy prices. Refinery premiums cast doubt on speculators
Refiners are paying up to $5 to $6 a barrel on top of current record prices to secure high-grade oil, traders said, double the level of a year ago. The fact that refiners are willing to pay a higher price for physical supplies than the futures benchmark lends weight to the argument that speculators are not the cause of record oil prices.

Oil traders on both sides of the Atlantic gave warning that American efforts to extend US regulation to include the London oil market risked simply channelling the trade offshore. Dubai’s Gold & Commodities Exchange launched three new oil futures contracts — West Texas Intermediate, Light Sweet Crude Oil and Brent Crude Oil — only two weeks ago.

"The renewed attraction of commodities as an investment vehicle is contrasting with the unattractiveness of the stock market," analysts Ritterbusch and Associates said in a research note.
